Sustainable life – What does it mean?

The subject of sustainability is so vast! There are problems wherever you look. Yes, it can be very overwhelming and distressing. From the global warming, deforestation, air and water pollution, natural resources depletion to poor waste management and aggressive farming. Where do we even begin?

Hurricanes, melting glaciers, spikes of temperature causing wild fires destroying crops and wildlife habitat. Those are issues we have all heard of just too many times. It might be happening far away from our home town, for some it might be right at your doorstep. Some are more affected then others but we are all responsible for the changes. What can we do about this ? How can we stop the devastation?

This is very complex and I’m not pretending to have the answers. I do know that all changes start within us! Each and every person can make a positive change TODAY. Only collectively we can make a difference globally.Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world!

We can only hope that the governments are addressing the issues of global environmental crisis and that they are acting now. We can only hope that for huge influential industries the future and heath of the human race is more important than the revenue they are making. I certainly want to see my children enjoying their bright future in a safe, beautiful environment. I do want to make sure, that they know how to preserve the natural resources for future of generations to come.

So what can we do? Hope is needed but it’s taking action that will bring the hopes high! Firstly, don’t just accept the way things are going. Be smart! Start living consciously, sustainable and more aware. Imagine what a power of change we all have if we act collectively trying to achieve the same goal and better life for all.

Sustainable living – what does it mean?

No, it does not mean that you need to swap your car for a horse and carriage! It does not mean you need to give up all your luxuries or become a nomad. I will not be trying to convince you to get rid of your mobile phone or your TV.

Sustainable life means becoming conscious and aware. Sounds simple? It is simple! We all need to stop and think. Things we have to consider are all those things around us. Our food, transportation, way we live and shop every day. Being sustainable means making informed choices that least impact the environment. It means reducing waste by using all the food we purchased, growing your own if you can, buying quality products that will last longer and learning to enjoy simple things in life.

Do I need to invest money to live sustainable?

Absolutely not! The beauty of sustainable life is that you will SAVE  money! There are lots of tricks,  improvement tactics you can introduce to your everyday life today, without spending a penny! The chances are that if you are reading this, you are ready to save yourself some dosh and become the everyday warrior and a green hero. You don’t have to buy solutions, you can be the solution!

Why is sustainable living important?

Because it’s the only way we can meet our needs without negatively impacting the needs of future generation!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not an activist (although I admire their commitment and determination) but just responsible citizen of the world. The least I can do is  to encourage you to consider making changes, to help and guide through this process to make it as simple as possible, to open your eyes to some solutions you might have not though of, to inspire you, to set a good example. If you are a parent just like me you probably know the power of setting good example, right?!

Children are the future that we are molding right now. It’s more important than ever to show them the conscious way of living and help them develop the right habits for their brighter future. I certainly feel my responsibility here and I know this is the best investment I’m making!

It is just too easy to forget that “We are not just visitors on this plant, it belongs to us just as we belong to her, its past is ours and so is its future” (Amin Maalouf). Your are equally responsible for the choices you make and how our choices impact the world.

So, where to start?

Start with what you are in full control of, reduce your waste. When you look at the a supermarket shelves you realize the mountain of pointless packaging, it’s truly shocking! As a consumer I choose products that have minimal or no packaging or at least those with recyclable packaging. This is a good place to start your journey. You might think that this will make a little difference….Just think for a moment. Using the logic of supply and demand principles customer’s willingness to purchase is driving force. We all can create powerful shift for better! Yet again, it comes down to consciousness and collective collaboration.

Simple, small changes, one step at a time. This is a journey and we all learn as we go along. Open your mind to new ways and please, give yourself a huge credit for this!
